Weekend Tune-Up: Tunes for your weekend by A$AP Rocky, Yukon Blonde, Disclosure & more

A playlist of 15 tunes to launch you into the weekend, Spotify playlist included.

Posted By on Fri, May 29, 2015 at 1:30 PM

Memorial Day has come and gone, which means that the kick-off to summer is underway. Not to worry, the Weekend Tune-Up is primed to accompany you to pool, beach or barbecue. This week's rather versatile edition hits on dance, pop, hip-hop, lo-fi, R&B and jazz. A$AP Rocky surprised us with his new album, and pushed it out a week early. The production is top notch. Yukon Blonde dropped a fresh single, just ahead of a new album due out June 16.  Unknown Mortal Orchestra finally released their new record, and it's good! New outfit James Davis dropped an EP, and this one caught me off guard, in a good way. Fans of chill, singer-songwriter fare and grooving sounds will dig this. Do we have a Neon Indian sighting? After a four-year hiatus, he drops a gem on us. To cap off the Tune-Up is world/jazz-fusionists Snarky Puppy. The song I've included is an instrumental outro, something I normally avoid, but you need to hear Snarky Puppy. Enjoy, music lovers!

Weekend Tune-Up: Tunes for your weekend by Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Little Dragon & more

A playlist of 15 tunes to launch you into the weekend, Spotify playlist included.

Here we are, already creeping up on Memorial Day weekend. Hard to type that and not be surprised at how fast the year seems to be zooming by. At least I have your music needs covered. New Music Tuesday was kind once again. Hot Chip finally dropped their new LP, and it doesn't disappoint, a mix of R&B and electro Brit-pop that makes for a really fun record for the summer. Tame Impala continues to tease us with tracks from their forthcoming LP — are you digging the direction they're headed in? — as does Unknown Mortal Orchestra, while Shark Week treated us to a fine debut, Beach Fuzz. If you're into sandy, surf-informed garage rock, give Shark Week a spin. Interpol, I mean Ceremony, also released a new album for all you post-punk junkies (and hti Epic Problem June 22). All of these bands plus some others you should know about are featured in this edition of Weekend Tune-Up. Jam it through the long weekend, and have a happy and safe Memorial Day!

Weekend Tune-Up: Tunes for your weekend by Incubus, Brandon Flowers, Other Lives & more

A playlist of 15 tunes to launch you into the weekend, Spotify playlist included.

Posted By on Fri, May 15, 2015 at 12:21 PM

After a huge Tuesday in music last week, this week has proven a bit more subdued. I still managed to dig up 15 new tracks for you (it wasn't too hard). Snoop Dogg released his new album, and yeah, it's pretty good. In large part because Pharrell Williams handled production. It pairs well with the warm weather. I've included another new song from Hot Chip, just in time for a new LP that drops this upcoming Tue., May 19. It's been four years since we've heard anything new from Incubus, and the Cali outfit just released a new EP, the first of two that are expected in 2015. And then there's the excellent new outing from The Helio Sequence... The latest edition of Weekend Tune-Up features cuts from all these artists, plus many others you likely need in your life. Play on.

Release date on new album, Currents still forthcoming

Tame Impala, the beloved darling psychedelic rock project from Down Under helmed by multi-instrumental singer-songwriter Kevin Parker, has been working on new material and have so far leaked the seven-plus epic "Let It Happen."

Today, Parker & Co. have not only unleashed the first "official" single, "'Cause I'm a Man" that, along with "Let it Happen," will appear on the band's forthcoming third LP, but have revealed the title of said LP: Currents. Both songs were originally drafted out in planes, cars, hotels and homes following the completion of and tour behind 2012's well-regarded Lonerism, and were both written, performed, recorded, produced and mixed by Parker in Fremantle, Western Australia. The track sees its official release on Tues., April 7 through Interscope. No word yet on an official release date for Currents.

Take a listen to the falsetto cooing vocals and meandering instrumentals of "'Cause I'm A Man" below, and get excited...
