Listen: Lundy, "PSA Part 2 (Lundy's America)"

Full disclosure: Lundy and I go back, like rode-the-same-bus-to-high-school back, but music you like is music you like. So, even as I strap on my truthful music blogger vest, it’s easy to share my enthusiasm for his debut track/video for "PSA Part 2 (Lundy's America)," which dropped earlier this week.

Last call: a big fat playlist of drinking songs

More than 30 songs about boozin' it up touch on a range of genres, from outlaw country to pop to hip hop and more; Spotify playlist included

Posted By and on Fri, Feb 27, 2015 at 3:34 PM

In honor of the drinking issue, new CL Contributor Timothy Boyson and I have brainstormed a booze-themed playlist — in sum, a bunch of songs about getting schnockered up, some of them rather well known, others not so much, and they touch on a range of genres — outlaw country, alt rock, hip hop, reggae rock, New Wave, folk, indie and mainstream pop, soul, electronica and even some vintage lounge sounds. For your convenience, I've included both a Spotify-produced playlist, and for those who aren't members, a straightforward list of the songs that are included on it. Cheers!

Chuck D talks Race, Rap, and Reality at Eckerd College

Posted By on Thu, Feb 26, 2015 at 12:14 PM

ChuckD_web1.jpg

I could tell you that Chuck D is funnier than you might expect him to be. I could tell you that he is simultaneously a commanding presence and a humble man simply living out his plan. I could remind you that he does not mince his words and has very little problem speaking truth to power.

I wanted to show you Wednesday night’s Race, Rap, and Reality event but the powers that be wouldn’t allow it.

Blur announce first album in 12 years, The Magic Whip, share lyric video for "Go Out"

Damon Albarn and co. drop their eighth album on Apr. 28

Announced earlier today from a press conference in a London Chinese restaurant (happy New Year!), Blur will release their first album in 12 years, The Magic Whip, due out April 27 internationally and April 28 in the U.S.

Along with the announcement, they’ve released the lyric video to a new track “Go Out.” After a cursory listen, this sounds like what most would expect, and want, from a beloved mid-'90s Britpop band: a simple, repetitive hook sandwiched between sleepy vocals, loads of fuzzed-out feedback and an easily danceable beat that could find a nice home on terrestrial rock radio, or whatever’s left of it.

Watch/listen to “Go Out” and view the track list from The Magic Whip below:

Flesh and Bone Records will re-release Brother Cephus' Wounded Hearts 1&2 on limited cassettes

Tampa brothers will celebrate with a free show at The Bricks Ybor on Feb. 6

Five months after a pair of summertime CD release shows, Tampa indie rock duo Brother Cephus have decided to buck normal release trends in the hopes of creating a long term creative outlet for themselves because — let’s face it — the traditional model of writing and then accumulating debt to record and tour behind one full album isn’t exactly sustainable for most outfits.

Action Bronson announces major label LP, Mr. Wonderful, out March 24

Also drops second single "Actin' Crazy"

action-bronson.jpg

As CL’s resident Action Bronson fanboy, it doesn’t take much to profess my love for the big, Albanian MC and everything he brings to hip hop today — a fine taste for gourmet foods, a lack of self-seriousness bordering on absurdity, and a je ne sais quoi so crudely New York, “rapper” hardly scratches the surface. He’s a character; oddly formed, oversized and baked out in a way only this city could manage.

So, after a long-string of mixtapes and an EP, it’s nice to hear he’ll finally drop his first major-label full-length, Mr. Wonderful, via Atlantic Records on March 24. The album pairs the Queens emcee with a solid roster of top producers including Mark Ronson, The Alchemist, 88 Keys and frequent collaborator Party Supplies.

An Earful (Local Edition): Big Guava downsizes, Coastline brings Flaming Lips & Future Islands to Vinoy Park, and Gatsby streams new LP

Festusiasts, hip hop heads: listen up.

Big Guava is back, and while it’s not as big this time around, it will have a noticeable impact on the agendas of some local festhusiasts. Live Nation’s summertime music festival is taking over the shed we’re still calling “Gary” for two days, May 8 and 9, which happens to be the same dates that Bay area community radio station WMNF will stage the 34th installment of its long running summer’s eve bacchanal, Tropical Heatwave. There’s obviously not a lot of crossover between the Heatwave crowd (think Paul Thorn, Joseph Arthur) and Big Guava attendees (last year’s headliners included Outkast and Haim), but Heatwave is known for bringing in a whole slew of up-and-coming acts before they break big (see: Elephant Stone, Carolina Chocolate Drops). Both fests are still months away from any lineup announcements, so the potential effect on attendance at Heatwave is still too vague to even try to predict. Stay tuned here and here.
