We've got a fatty-stacked Hump Day, as far as concerts go. Take a look at the breakdown for this Wed., Jan. 27 below...
Ana Popovic Before joining the Experience Hendrix Tour as a special guest beginning in March, blues guitar songstress Ana Popvic hits town on a run of solo headlining dates behind Blue Room. The 2015 LP was recorded with her musically-inclined dad Milton, produced by Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Santana), and composed of blues, rock and soul songs they used to listen to and play together when she was growing up in New Belgrade, Serbia, and that continue to influence her slinky grooving sound today. Amid those tracks best showcasing her searing, sliding fretwork and husky-sultry vocal quality – which bolsters her dad’s more heavily accented lead tenor – are Jethro Tull’s “We Used to Know” and the Robert Petway standard, “Catfish Blues.” (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)
David Bowie Tribute Night The dear, late Thin White Duke simultaneously hit 69, released his swan song 25th LP, Blackstar, and peaced out liked a true rock n’ roller on January 10, 2016. He’ll be sorely missed by far too many of us whose lives were touched and tastes shaped by his artistic genius. Ale and the Witch is one of the first venues to put together a tribute show, with more than a dozen local performers rotating on and off the upstairs BBQ Den stage amid delivering an array of Bowie’s material. Among those currently confirmed: Trigger City Trio, Colleen Cherry & Andy Gray, Jordan James Esker, Reina Collins, Fran Snyder, Sasha Tuck, Dan DeGregory, David Alder, Matthew Mayes, Vince Gidaro and Morgan Donahue. Admission is free; show starts at 7:30 and should be done by 11 p.m. (Ale and the Witch, St. Petersburg)
BBQ Wednesday Acoustic Series: Adam Lee with AJ Gaither, One Trip Little The weekly assemblage of food, brews n’ tunes at New World has proved rather alluring in recent editions, and this night’s bill might make you hafta saunter over to Fuma and throw back a few shots of Jameson. Chicago Americana troubadour Adam Lee has a raggedy drawling baritone and the distinction of spending the past few years playing Johnny Cash in Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet (this is his “Cashin' Out Tour” – get it?). His repertoire is a mix of classic country and original material influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, Justin Townes Earle and Springsteen. Kansas City’s AJ Gaither twangs and bounces through his one-man-band drum kit-harmonica-and-guitar schtick with fast efficient ease in rural-geared odes about whiskey and moonshine, fishing and faith, dogs and trucks and even some bayou muck. Tampa’s own One Trip Little warms it all up with ominous outlaw country and folk tunes. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Natural Child with Faux Ferocious, Johnny Mile and the Kilometers, Selectric Nashville band Natural Child got a lot of ink when they earned some buzz in 2014 with third LP and Burger Records debut, Dancin’ With Wolves, its vintage-soaked fuzzy, grungy garage rock fitting perfectly within the label’s sonic milieu (Thee Oh Sees, King Kahn and Ty Segall are among the names who’ve released records under the imprint) and fleshing out the membership from three to five members. Fellow Nashville outfit Faux Ferocious treads similar grimy indie rock terrain but take psychedelic and post-punk turns in fresh full-length Blues Legends. (Local 662, St. Petersburg)
