The Woodgrains
Hang up your flower crowns, crocheted tops and high-waisted shorts, girls. Pulling off the true nostalgic flare of the 1960s and ‘70s is no easy feat, but this psychedelic trio has mastered the art to a T. The Woodgrains are heavy on the Zep and heavier on the riffs, making for a real nitty-gritty Southern folk-rock atmosphere. After relocating to Athens, Ga., and gradually becoming a prominent bunch, The Woodgrains have managed to hold tight to their Okefenokee Swamp roots, which shows in the deep hippie-esque nostalgia of their self-titled sophomore album (complete with long Jimmy Page inspired locks, of course). (Dunedin Brewery, Dunedin) —Jackie Braje

Daryl Hance Trio with Genghis Flahn, Troy Youngblood Don’t let their punny name fool you — Genghis Flahn is a honey-sweet melodic quintet who refers to their fluid rock ‘n’ roll style as “Floridana.” Jacksonville native and Mofro former Daryl Hance is a singer-guitarist who hits hard on the bluesy and funky down-south rock ‘n’ roll and recently released his second self-produced album, Land of Trembling Earth. Also performing is Troy Youngblood crooning Florida folk music with heartfelt lyrics; particularly appropos for fans of The Man (Johnny Cash, that is). (New World Brewery, Ybor City) —JB

Bruce’s 60th Birthday Bash with Jeff Brawer, Rodney Smith, David Kibby, Shae Krispinsky, Dan Padilla For the past couple of decades, Corner Club bartender Bruce Weiss has been a sympathetic ear, shrewd baseball prognosticator and a mustachioed gent before mustaches became cool again. Local punk/folk musicians and troubadours gather to celebrate the community icon at a favorite bar that needs some cheer after mourning the loss of one of its regulars, a sweet, drunken-dancin’ Otis Redding karaoke master and Vietnam vet known simply as Animal. (Corner Club, Tampa) —Julie Garisto
