Lots of noteworthy news in local music coming from bands that hail from here, and from venues bringing big name acts back to town to get our adrenaline pumping and hearts thumping.
We have long been fans of rising local indie rock stars Zulu Wave
, which earned a spot on the CBGB Festival stage two years in a row and were one of two bands picked to play last year's Coastline Festival
. Hell, we even had a stripped-down version of the band play our CL Music Issue Launch Party a few weeks back. So you can imagine our excitement when the foursome (currently Ariel Cortes, Michael Barrow, Brian Schanck and Danny Piechocki) announced they'd be issuing a follow-up to 2012 EP Nyami Nyami
. The new album, Jagorilla
, is due out September 30, and the band hits the road for a Southeastern hype tour August 15. A video trailer hyping the album holds some intriguing sounds that preview what's to come. Check it out after the jump...
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Tampa's favorite label and a multi-Best of the Bay award winner, New Granada Records. So far, Keith and Susie Ulrey have issued a new Permanent Makeup 7", returned to Austin with some bands to host a totally unofficial SXSW showcase, signed another top-notch local act, DieAlps!
, and is set to release the eponymous debut EP from the waltzing, husband-and-wife-led baroque pop quintet (self-engineered and recorded in their home) on September 23. According to Austrian-born frontwoman Connie Calcaterra, "The songs symbolize 'home' to me. Mostly written in my bedroom in Austria starting 10 years ago. These songs have been sort of a personal companion of mine throughout this past decade and the many life changes I've experienced."
The quintet recorded the video for the lovely, harmony-rich and nostalgia-drenched first single "Walking" right here in the CL Space. It even earned a "Video of the Day" nod from Fuzzy Logic
. Check it out below. DieAlps! celebrates its release with a show at New World Brewery on Sat., Sept. 20; and much later this year (nearly at the end of it), New Granada stages its 20th anniversary party with three days of festivities featuring current and past bands at New World from December 25-28
...And just in case you missed all the buzz right here on CL, Merchandise
continues to promote After the End
, their forthcoming album for 4AD, which signed the Tampa-spawned nationally-buzzed-about band last year. (Pitchfork has gushed about Merchandise many times over, recently likening them to "Morrissey in Hell" and lauding guitarist David Vassalotti's "skillfully workmanlike riffs and sprawling psychedelic solos.") Frontman Carson Cox told UME
that After the End
is "the most proper pop record we have ever done ... I'm talking about pop rock - R&B." The 10-song album drops on August 25. The latest single "Enemy" showcases the dusty rambling yet upbeat driving New Wave-tinged turn they've taken (Tampa Theatre-shot video here
