What the Super Bowl can learn from TV awards shows

It's simple: Reese & Sofia = Brady & Gronkowski.

Girl-on-girl red carpet action: Sofia & Reese at the SAGs.
  • Girl-on-girl red carpet action: Sofia & Reese at the SAGs.

I spend my days discussing things like pedagogy and scholarship. By the time I get home, I’m damn near comatose. I cozy up to my dog, sip some Malbec. Feet up on the ottoman. Then at 7 p.m., E! News.

E! News is my jam. Plenty of other professors watch PBS while listening to NPR and reading the New York Times. Somebody’s got to watch Giuliana Rancic break the day’s shit down.

Awards season is my jammy jam. And we’re in the thick of it. Celebrities, couture, diamonds, sexy men in tuxedos who look like regular sexy men in tuxedos though they’re really sexy men in tuxedos protecting big-ass diamonds. HOT.

You’ve got the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, and the Grammys. And, finally, the big swinging dick: the Oscars.

For anyone who loves awards season as much as I do, you know that some hot mess is required. Two shows deep, we’ve met the quota. At the Golden Globes, Jeremy Renner made that live, on-stage, sexual harassment-y comment about JLo’s own “globes.”

Sunday, on the SAG Awards red carpet, TNT’s Danielle Demski went on about Rashida Jones’s tropical tan, to which Rashida, in a moment of pure honesty that was pure genius, replied, “I’m ethnic.” Last week, Benedict Cumberbatch appeared on Tavis Smiley and used the phrase, “colored actors.” People have called out the Academy for snubbing Selma.

But something else is “trending.” And it won’t stop. E! News is all a-tingle.

Girl-on-girl red carpet action.

"It's Monsoon season, bitches!" The CL interview with RuPaul's Drag Race winner, Jinkx Monsoon

Posted By on Tue, May 21, 2013 at 11:48 AM

RuPaul's Drag Race has turned American on to plenty of fishy and glamorous drag queens during it's five seasons, but none have stolen more hearts than campy theater queen, Jinkx Monsoon. Jinkx (performed by Jerick Hoffer) went from this year's underdog, all the way to winner, crowned by RuPaul herself. We had the chance to catch up with her as she prepared to bring her act to Tampa past weekend:

“America's Next Drag Superstar”, Jinkx Monsoon has an incredible ring to it, doesn't it? Congratulations on winning Season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race! Has it set in yet, really?

On Newtown: Stop micromanaging the debate

Posted By on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 11:02 AM

Since the unspeakable became a reality on Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary, there has been, for every impassioned opinion, outcry and Facebook meme, a smarmy cynic wagging a finger and playing armchair society critic.

Marshall Debuts Major 50 FX Headphones

Marshall guitar amplifiers, known for their trademark black and gold design, have come to exemplify “rock 'n roll.” Not only are they known among guitar aficionados for their Super Lead series of amps, but the words “Marshall stack” have become a household name among musicians looking for that loud, hard rock guitar sound.

Now, in 2012, Marshall Headphones seems to be making a serious fourth-quarter play for some of those heavily-branded, lifestyle audiophiles — offering an alternative to the slick, colorful branding of Beats by Dre that all the kids are sporting these days.

The Marshall headphones feature the trademark tweed stylings of their amp design, plus the familiar black and gold Marshall signature and deliver superior sound and comfort. Ours were tested on an iPhone, iPad and laptop with streaming music at 128K, 320K and CD-quality. Once broken in (it took about a week), the form-fitting headphones were snug but not too tight, and the convenient black cloth carrying case made tossing them into a bag alongside your iPad or laptop a piece of cake.

The Force was with us at Star Wars Celebration VI

Posted By on Tue, Sep 11, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Before Tampa was invaded by the Imperial National Convention, Orlando, was taken over by Star Wars Celebration VI. The 7 million square-foot Orange County Convention Center was filled with shopping, trading, screenings, cosplayers, educational panels, laser tag, speed dating and Legos ... everything a fan could want, with the added bonus of lots of chicks in gold bikinis.

Attendees from all over the world were greeted by a looming AT-AT Walker and some of their favorite characters decked out in beads while R2D2 took a Myspace-style group shot.

Bill Maher skewers Romney, Ryan & Republicans in sold-out show in Clearwater

Posted By on Mon, Sep 3, 2012 at 9:05 AM

Bill Maher appeared at a sold-out performance at Ruth Eckerd Hall on Saturday night in Clearwater, where the political satirist tore apart Republicans, "Teabaggers," organized religion and the idea of American exceptionalism in a 100-minute performance.

Coming less than 48 hours after the GOP closed out its convention across the Bay in Tampa, fans expecting to hear plenty of bashing of Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and company were not disappointed as the HBO comic eviscerated Republicans as essentially non-thinking white people afraid of changes happening in a multicultural America.

Referring to the "bullshit" that took place across the Courtney Campbell Causeway, Maher immediately seized in his opening moments on the bizarre Clint Eastwood performance at the RNC.

He said the scene was a metaphor for the entire Republican Party when it comes to judging Obama: "An old white guy arguing with an Obama that does not exist."

Pussy Riot found guilty

Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot face two years of jailtime for hooliganism.

Posted By on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 11:05 AM

Russian girl punk rockers Pussy Riot were found guilty of hooliganism Friday. The three women were charged with premeditated hooliganism by organized groups of people, motivated by "religious hatred or hostility" said Judge Marina Syrova Friday morning. Pussy Riot was arrested after performing outside an orthodox church in February, they stated the protest was against the Russian Orthodox church leader's support of Putin's leadership. Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, are sentenced to two years in jail.

Radical Canadian femme rocker Peaches wrote Free Pussy Riot, in solidarity with the band. The Knife, Lykke Li, Miike Snow and others joined Peaches in the video.

Local St. Pete game developers hit on the (mono) cellular level

A local game developer is using Kickstarter to crowd-source their latest mobile game.

Posted By on Mon, Aug 13, 2012 at 6:49 PM

Making a video game isn't a simple task. Hell, even making a simple video game isn't a simple task. Plus, it's always been something that's happened in far-off magical places like Orlando or Raleigh. So, when I get a press release about a "local game" coming out, I'm interested.

Amoeba, produced by Solvent Studios is that game and it seems they've started a Kickstarter campaign to get the necessary funding.

Outside the Box: Metrocon 2012

Making better costumes one interview at a time.

Posted By on Wed, Aug 1, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Join Matthew Michael Awesome and I as we embark upon a quest to find the solution to all my costume related issues from the cosplaying experts at Metrocon 2012.

Things I have learned:
1. My Velma Dinkley crush has not gone away. Jinkies!
2. Interviewing girls with epic boobs at eye level is a LOT more difficult than it looks. (I'm assuming practice is required to fix this... I'm not quite sure how to pitch that to the wife.)
3. I do not yet own all the cool t-shirts.
4. People don't mind being made fun of as long as they know you get the source material.
5. I would make a good Hawkeye.
6. Batman Plushies are adorable!
7. There is a massive resurgence in "My Little Pony" stuff and it is blowing my mind.
8. I still don't get Naruto...at all.
9. There aren't enough hi-fives in the world for the dude in the Iron Spider Man outfit.
10. It's nice hanging around a large group of people that get my jokes. :)
