Podcast: Director Rob Williams talks about screening Role/Play for Tampa's TIGLFF audience

Last week, the organizers of the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF) gave movie fans a rare opportunity to affect a work in progress: They invited writer/director Rob Williams to Muvico Baywalk to show an early cut of his new film, Role/Play, and afterwards opened the floor to audience comments. The cool part: We'll see whether their critiques had any impact because the final version of Role/Play screens during the film festival this fall (Oct. 7-17).

Role/Play explores the relationship between two men, a soap opera actor and a gay marriage activist, who are dealing with the pressures of fame and the quest to be their real selves (they're played by very hot real-life couple Steve Callahan and Matthew Montgomery). A quiet, deliberately  paced film, it's a departure for Williams, whose fizzy, farcical Make the Yuletide Gay was a hit of last year's festival.

Will Williams listen to the audience member who said that one scene went on too long? Will the addition of music add or detract? Will he change the ending? Rob (along with TIGLFF's Ken Hodges) talked about these questions and more with CL Editor David Warner for our ArtsSpeak/CLGBT podcast. Listen after the break:

Posted by Mark E. Leib on Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 2:11 PM

It's the musical that had to be written. And only Gil Perlroth could be trusted to bring it off.

When Gulfport:The Musical premieres in January, 2010 at the Catherine Hickman Theater as part of the town's centennial celebration, it will feature the book, music and lyrics of one of the most prolific and successful playwrights in the Tampa Bay area. At age 81, Gil Perlroth (pictured) has written over 20 shows, including the recent hit at the Venue Theatre, Ain't Retirement Grand?

After the break, read more about Gulfport:The Musical and listen to my interview with Gil Perlroth on Creative Loafing's ArtsSpeak podcast.

ArtsSpeak Podcast: Please don't go, Julie Rowe!

Posted by David Warner on Sat, Aug 15, 2009 at 10:37 AM

Julie Rowe is one of the Bay area's most talented (and acclaimed) actors, and now she has a new gig: She's going to be director of education at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, an Equity house (known once upon a time as the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre) in Jupiter, FL.

The news was cause for some alarm in local theater circles. No more performances by Julie like her most recent tour de force? But, as she tells CL theater critic Mark Leib in her interview for an ArtsSpeak podcast, she's not "leaving" exactly — she's just "expanding." Podcast after the break.

ArtsSpeak: How to Make Love to Adrian Colesberry

Posted by David Warner on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 11:12 AM

In the latest edition of ArtsSpeak, CL's arts and culture podcast, Daily Loaf book blogger William McKeen interviews Adrian Colesberry (right), standup comic and former biomedical engineer, on his very funny new book, How to Make Love to Adrian Colesberry. Turns out the first rule of How to Interview Adrian Colesberry is: try not to mention the name "Adrian Colesberry." But Bill — University of Florida journalism prof and author of Outlaw Journalist, which Greg Palast calls the Great Red Shark of Hunter S. Thompson biographies — still gets great info from Mr. Colesberry, including the reactions to the book from the women in his life — his current wife said it made her both angry and horny — and the chapter that should make Adrian's momma proudest, "Adrian and your asshole."

After the jump, listen to the podcast and view Colesberry's must-see YouTube promos.

Peter Golenbock's biography of George Steinbrenner, George: The Poor Little Rich Boy Who Built the Yankee Empire, is one hell of a yarn. And no one tells a baseball story better than Golenbock, a St. Pete resident and the author of such classics as The Bronx Zoo and Balls. Listen to part one of Scott Farrell's interview with Golenbock as he shares stories of Steinbrenner's early years before becoming Yankee tyrant and Tampa benefactor.
