After weeks of hype, director David O. Russell's follow-up to last year's beloved Silver Linings Playbook has finally arrived — and for once, the hype is more than justified. American Hustle is one of the best, most-entertaining movies of 2013. Featuring an amazing cast (Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner … Louis CK?!!?), terrific production design, a smart and funny script (by Russell and Eric Singer) and enough bad/great 1970s style to fill Studio 54, American Hustle wants nothing more than to entertain the audience with two electrifying hours of con jobs, put ons and one never-ending story about ice fishing. It's a blast.
And for once, Bay area film fans will get to see the movie along with everyone else. Unlike Silver Linings Playbook, which received a slow rollout after a limited release in New York and LA (it hit Tampa Bay sometime in Jan. 2013), American Hustle is going wide today. And no wonder — It stars some of the biggest stars on the planet, and is considered a front-runner for the major film awards. (It's facing stiff competition from 12 Years A Slave, among others.)
