Piers Morgan "debates" Alex Jones on gun control

CNN talk show host Piers Morgan has been under siege since he passionately spoke out for gun control in the wake of the gun-shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14.

Morgan's advocacy has led gun-owners and Second Amendment supporters to petition the White House to deport the British native back to the United Kingdom. Last night, while millions of Americans were hoping the BCS Championship game would turn into a legitimate event, Morgan did an inventive bit of counter-programming: he booked the Libertarian and extremely paranoid radio talk show host Alex Jones to talk about gun-control. Sparks flew, though calling this a debate would be a misnomer. It was more of a harangue coming from the — at times — out of control Jones.

"The Second Amendment isn't there for duck hunting," said Jones. "It's there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs."

He went on: "1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms. Doesn't matter how many lemmings you get out there on the street begging for them to have their guns taken from them. We will not relinquish them, do you understand?"

Interestingly, during the middle of the broadcast, the White House responded for the first time to the more than 100,000 petitions (anything over 25,000 petitions is supposed to elicit an official response).

Politico reported that White House press secretary Jay Carney sent out a brief statement, "The White House responds to all petitions that cross the threshold and we will respond to this one. In the meantime, it is worth remembering that the freedom of expression is a bedrock principle in our democracy."

The petition on the White House's "We the People" website was first posted on Friday, Dec. 21, two days after Morgan hosted a live town hall meeting on CNN. Among his guests on that show were Daniel Hernandez, who survived the shooting attack in Tucson, Ariz., that killed six and wounded 19 others, including former Congresswoman Gaby Giffords.

Morgan further infuriated gun owners and their advocates when he blasted Larry Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America, on his program last month, calling him "unbelievably stupid."

For the uninitiated, Alex Jones is the host of a daily talk-show based in Texas. He created the petition to deport Morgan. Rolling Stone called him "the most paranoid man in America."

Jones almost didn't make the taping of "Piers Morgan Live." Apparently he had a run-in with a TSA agent en route.
