Conducted by researchers from Shippensburg University, Texas Woman’s University, and the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, this study examined 177 women between the ages of 18 and 50 who had all been paid to perform in at least one sex scene. Of the porn stars studied, their average career span was 3.5 years. About 44 percent described themselves as single and two-thirds labeled themselves as bisexual compared with seven percent of women in the general population.
Less surprisingly, these female porn performers also claimed they enjoyed sex more and they started having sex at an earlier average age — 15 as opposed to 17. Excluding on-screen co-stars, they reported having had sex with an average of 75 partners compared to five for women outside the industry. Porn stars also reported greater drug and alcohol use, which the researchers suggest could be linked to sensation-seeking personality types.
