Tired of prowling the bars and bowels of the Internet looking for your next date? Why not give speed dating a shot? You never know, you might find your perfect match or at least make a few new friends in the process.
This Thursday, Nov. 15, Tru Colors Dating Services and Singles Event presents a women-for-women speed dating event at the Flamingo Resort in St. Petersburg. And Tru Colors founder Amber Dame anticipates this will be the first of many LGBT singles, matchmaking, and networking events in the Tampa Bay area.
"If this first event is a success, what I hope to create is more than just a dating service," Dame said. "This idea of providing events for local LGBTQ singles in the Tampa Bay area is to create the chance for them to meet their ideal partner. However, the main idea is creating events and providing a way for them to have new experiences with other like-minded singles, build friendships, and hopefully raise some money for the charities that support our community."
Dame is the sole owner and operator of the fledgling company. She was inspired by her own attempts to connect with the local LGBT community. "I kept hearing these commercials for companies hosting outdoor events and singles activities. 'Meet local professional active singles just like you!' Except a big difference between the singles they were targeting, and myself is they were all heterosexual singles," she said.
It's been a grassroots effort for her to get the word out about her first speed dating event from the get-go. Over the past few months, you might have run into her at any of the area's gay hotspots, where she was likely handing out flyers and talking up this Thursday's event. She also recently connected with Rainbow 411 and GSH Radio for a media sponsorship.
This first event is women only, but don't worry guys you'll get your chance soon enough. Dame is hoping to host a men-only event sometime before Valentine's Day.
Women of all ages are welcome to speed date Thursday night. So far, the ages of those registered range from 23 to 70 Dame said. She has room to seat up to 50 women and hopes to be able to divide them into two age groups.
And remember: Pre-registration is required. Dame discourages walk-ins and gawkers from showing up to keep those dating feeling comfortable and relaxed.
It costs $15 for speed dating alone and $25 to date and for all you can drink. There will also be a 50/50 raffle benefitting Metro Wellness and a clothing collection for victims of Hurricane Sandy. For more information and to register, visit Tru Color's Facebook page.
