  • Levi Love behind the bar at the Emerald. This week, Levi and Judah are opening their own bar, the Broken Tusk.

For weeks, rumors swirled that the Best of the Bay winning Emerald bar was changing or closing. No one knew exactly what was happening, but suddenly you didn't need to hit the ATM before going inside, because you could use your credit card.

We've just learned that the Emerald isn't closing, but losing its now-iconic bartenders — Judah and Levi Love.

The Loves purchased the old Mac Daddy's Liquor Lounge at 4625 28th St. N. in St. Petersburg. The new bar is called the Broken Tusk (on Tuesday, they hinted via Facebook that the name involved elephants). All we know is the Broken Tusk is a "dive bar/biker bar formerly known as Mac Daddys."

The Emerald, open since 1950, will continue to serve classic dive bar cocktails with a heavy pour, and bartender Mo will take over booking and management again.

The departure is amicable and today The Emerald posted, "On behalf of the Em, congrats guys!!"

There's no information yet about an exact opening, but you can check here for updates.
