Although The Washington D.C. based group FreedomWorks was created in the mid-aughts, most people outside the Beltway didn't hear of it until the Tea Party movement exploded in 2009.

It's been a leading organization in growing the movement — perhaps the leading organization.

It's also been used as a bogeyman by critics who claim that the Tea Party isn't grassroots, citing the funding it's received from FreedomWorks, which is tied closely to its founder — corporate lobbyist and former Texas Congressman, Dick Armey.

This Saturday, FreedomWorks' members will hold an opening for their new Tampa campaign office at 1311 West Shore Blvd., Suite 101, from 10 a.m.-noon.

In July, FreedomWorks announced that it was endorsing Republican Connie Mack IV in his bid for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Bill Nelson. It's also backing congressional Republicans Adam Hasner and Allen West in their contests this fall.

FreedomWorks provides candidates with yard signs, door hangers and other get out the vote materials, and the Tampa office is one of five being opened throughout the Sunshine State.
