Sports talk radio in the Tampa Bay region sure has taken leaps and bounds over the past few years. After being dominated by WDAE since the station switched over to the format in 1997, 1040 ESPN and 1010 CBS Radio joined the game within the past three years.
But on Thursday at noon, the game officially took a major turn when the FM station 98.7 The Fan debuted with a press conference announcing the partnership between CBS Radio Tampa Bay and USF Athletics. The multi-year agreement begins with the 2012-13 school year and includes coverage of USF football and men’s basketball, with baseball and women’s basketball broadcasted on 1010AM The Fan.
“Today marks the beginning of Sports Radio The Fan — a station dedicated solely to Tampa Bay area sports,” said Ben Hill, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, CBS Radio Tampa Bay. “USF programming is an incredible complement to our lineup and a win for the local audience.”
The station will have locally produced programming throughout the entire day, including former Buccaneer lineman Booger McFarland, Lightning forward Chris Dingman and Tampa Bay Times columnist Gary Shelton.
The Tampa Bay region now includes three stations devoted to sports. In addition to WDAE and CBS Radio, 1040 ESPN features sports talk programming.
