Mitch Perry Report 6.21.12 - Nelson and Mack in a tight race

After more than a year on the campaign stump, it all ended rather ignominiously for George LeMieux yesterday. The one-time interim U.S. Senator from 2009-2010 from Florida was one of the big names when the GOP race began last year, along with Mike Haridopolos and Adam Hasner. Later businessman Craig Miller got into the race.

Now they're all gone after LeMieux called it quits. Haridopolos dropped out last summer, and after Congressman Connie Mack IV got into the race late last year, Hasner and Miller followed suit, opting to run for congressional seats.

And LeMieux? Like Hasner and Miller, he went nowhere once Mack got in. Not that the Fort Myers Representative has done anything newsworthy to earn his huge poll rating. But he does have that name recognition, along with big name endorsements and big time fundraising.

A new Quinnipiac poll out this morning also shows that Mack has a darned good chance of knocking off Democratic dinosaur Bill Nelson, trailing the incumbent by only 4 points, 43-39.

Speaking of Quinnipiac, they released another poll yesterday, that showed that the Florida electorate, in case you weren't certain, is damned conservative. The survey showed strong support for Rick Scott's purge of non-citizens from the voting rolls, as well as showing overall approval of the state's Stand Your Ground law.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee have released a video message for the 3,000 officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout the state who will be working in Tampa for the Republican Convention. Their message? Watch your step, as "anarchists" will try to provoke you and cause you to react in an unprofessional manner. Don't fall for it.

Meanwhile training continues for the thousands of volunteers who will be helping out at the RNC.
