The Gaily News: Clearwater one step closer to a domestic partnership registry (video)

A North Carolina pastor delivered a hate-filled rant laying out his plan for ridding the world of homosexuality. Following the state recently approving a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, during a recent sermon, Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden suggested rounding up and isolating "lesbians and queers" in a pen with electrified fences so they'll eventually die off.

Former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi was sentenced to 30 days in jail for using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate, Tyler Clementi, on a date with another man in their room, and allowing others in the dorm access to view the live-stream video. Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge shortly after realizing he had been watched via webcam. Ravi was convicted in March for the September 2010 incident and found guilty of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and witness and evidence tampering ? but not of a hate crime. Ravi faced up to 10 years in prison and was handed an unexpectedly light sentence.

Days after Gulfport approved the creation of a domestic partnership registry last week — the first municipality in Pinellas County to do so — Clearwater moved forward with similar legislation. At its May 17 meeting, Clearwater's City Council voted unanimously to create a registry for unmarried same-sex and heterosexual couples that would grant them certain medical and visitation rights, among other benefits. The council will have a final vote on the matter at its June 7 meeting.

St. Petersburg's City Council unanimously approved the first reading of a similar ordinance at a meeting earlier this month and will also take a second vote on it at a June 7 meeting. Meanwhile, Pinellas County is considering the creation of a county-wide registry.
