NuvaRing is currently the only birth control ring on US markets, but researchers are working to change that. Teams in the Dominican Republic, Chile, US, and Edinburgh are joining forces to develop a ring that does not have estrogen or any of the hormone's side effects. The new ring will contain ullipristal acetate, which is also found in the emergency contraceptive pill, ella. When this drug is taken in smaller doses as a pill, it can stop ovulation and periods. Now researchers are trying to get the dosage right so the drug can be used in ring form.

The ring is planned to be similar in size, shape, and usage to the NuvaRing. However, researchers hope the ullipristal based ring will result in less menstrual bleeding. They also expect it to have none of the side effects related to hormone-based pills, like headaches, weight gain, and loss of libido.
