SHIRI appears to be the brainchild of Nobuhiro Takahashi, who had a hand in developing both the kiss and hug transmission devices. Given the nature of his scientific endeavors, it seems likely that Takahashi is gearing up to develop a race of fully automated sex doll. What is not clear is if Takahashi is doing this to capitalize on all the men who would pay big money for surrogate lovers, or if he has a genuine robot fetish—a type of objectophilia in which a person prefers to have romantic relationships with robots.
