Questioning condoms in porn

As an outside observer of the porn industry, I have somewhat mixed feelings about the ordinance that will require condoms in adult films shot in LA. While I don't claim to have any answers on what is best for the industry, performers, or the public, the ordinance does raise a number of questions lawmakers should consider before finalizing this decision.

-How is requiring condoms in porn any different than requiring stunt-doubles in mainstream films to wear helmets? Why doesn't the city also require mainstream actors to kiss through dental dams to prevent the spread of herpes or diseases that could be life-threatening, like the flu?

-With 90% of US porns shot in LA's San Fernando Valley, will the smaller production companies simply stop applying and paying for filming permits? Won't larger studios just move to more porn-friendly locations, like Nevada where the economy functions on the basis of allowing that which other states deem illegal?

-How will the policing of this ordinance be funded and enforced?

-Has the city explored alternatives to condoms, like requiring performers to use antiretroviral drugs such as, Tenofovir, which may be more effective than condoms at blocking HIV?

-Some people within the industry argue that having sex for several hours with a condom—as occurs routinely on porn sets—actually increases the risk of transmitting STDs; they claim condoms cause an increased number of micro-abrasions when used for hours on end. Have any studies examined the effectiveness of condoms at blocking STDs after prolonged use?

-Instead of condoms, what if porn performers were required to go through a certification class that reviews all of the potential hazards in the industry and explains what to expect?

Ultimately this condom initiative sounds like a good idea, and it will no doubt look good on the resumes of city officials, but it's unclear if this regulation will do anything to protect performers or to reduce the spread of STDs.

What a stupid idea! Porn is fantasy. I already avoid porn with condoms so requiring them will be the death of commercial porn. Amateur porn is more interesting, anyways.
