Although the proposed Muslim cultural center called Park51 in Lower Manhattan has dropped from the front pages of the national news over the past couple of weeks, the issue of Islamaphobia is very much alive and well throughout the country.

The NY Times reported Wednesday that a group of teenagers in western New York were accused of harassing members of a mosque by yelling obscenities and insults during evening prayers for Ramadan, sideswiping with a member of the mosque with a vehicle and firing a shotgun outside.

There have others incidents, such as in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and  the upcoming situation at a church in Gainsville that has said for weeks that they intend to burn copies of the Koran on September 11.

The local activist group, St. Pete for Peace, now says that they journey to Gainesville on September 11 to hold a peaceful vigil across the street from the planned desecration.

“In the context of this Quran burning plan and the 'Ground Zero mosque' issue, the perception and treatment of Muslims is at a critical stage,” said Dina Formentini, executive director of St. Pete for Peace, “we believe it is vital that we in the peace community take an immediate stand to promote understanding, mutual respect and peace.”

The activist group is coordinating carpools from St.Petersburg, Tampa and Pasco County, and say they'll participate in the vigil from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. that afternoon.

The Dove Outreach Center says it will burn the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11 this year to "stand against the evil of Islam."  It's senior pastor, Terry Jones, is author of the book, "Islam is of the Devil."

The city of Gainesville has banned the proposed Koran burning and refused to issue a permit, but Jones has said that his church won't be deterred, and the burning will go as planned, where they would be subject to a fine.
