Rays grab gutsy 2-1 win from Blue Jays

More anxiety! Just what I need. The day after getting walloped by this Toronto team, Tampa Bay held on for a 2-1 victory, with David Price getting the W and Evan Longoria driving in the game-winning run in the home half of the eighth frame.

Things were quiet through four innings with no real scoring threats except for Sean Rodriguez in the second inning. He cracked a two-out triple in the bottom of the frame but was left stranded by Triple-A call up Brad Hawpe.

Toronto got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning. John Buck led off the frame, taking a 3-2 fastball from Price into the stands in left field for a home run. Three outs later and it was time for Tampa Bay to get one back.

Carlos Pena grounded out to begin the home half of the fifth. Rodriguez stepped to the plate and quickly found himself behind Toronto starter Shawn Marcum. He took three balls and then took the 3-2 curveball even further into left than the Buck homer. I guess he decided not to chance it, with the possibility of being left on base again; it was Rodriguez's ninth long ball this year. Dioner Navarro, back in the big leagues with the September roster expansion, hit a two-out single to keep the inning alive; he moved to third base on Jason Bartlett’s double. B.J. Upton was intentionally walked to load the bases in favor of the call-up Desmond Jennings. The rookie worked a good count but ended up hitting into a fielder’s choice, with Navarro thrown out at home and the Rays missing a golden opportunity to break the game wide open.

Rodriguez led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a base hit and promptly stole second for an immediate threat. As is all too often the case, he was stranded in scoring position. Hawpe struck out, followed by a Navarro grounder, moving Rodriguez to third. Bartlett grounded to third for yet another man left on base this year.

The Rays broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Ben Zobrist drew a walk while pinch-hitting for Jennings, followed by a base hit from Crawford. Longoria singled to drive Zobrist in for the go-ahead run. Carlos Pena then grounded to second and the runners held. With an open base, the Blue Jays decided not to give Rodriguez - 3-for-3 so far – the chance to hurt them again and walked him intentionally and loading the bases. Rays manager Joe Maddon teased everyone by putting Rocco Baldelli into the on-deck circle but allowed Hawpe to keep his spot rather than pinch-hit the fan favorite. Hawpe struck out, with home plate umpire Mark Carlson saying he failed to check his swing; it looked borderline from the couch and they didn’t give viewers a replay.

Rafael “MFIKY” Soriano came on to try for the save, with Price having the opportunity for the win. He started things off by getting Jose Bautista to ground out to third. Vernon Wells then tripled to make things a bit more hairy; it was a well-hit ball to left-center field and I thought B.J. Upton might have had it but it just got by him. Wells might have been held to a double but with Upton running full-out and hitting the wall, Crawford had to come in to make the throw. Soriano then struck out Adam Lind to put two men on ice. This brought Buck, responsible for the sole Blue Jays run of the evening, back to the plate. Buck fell behind 0-2 quickly but battled to a 2-2 count and took a fastball for a long ride to left field. He didn’t get enough gas on this one and it was a pretty easy catch by Crawford to end the game.

Another nail-biter in the books and another series victory to stay one game back of the New York Yankees. Frickin’ great outing for Sean Rodriguez, who not only went 3-for-3 with the homer but also made an outstanding to throw out Lind and end the fourth inning. He was a double short of hitting for the cycle. In his post-game press conference, Maddon said he was going to go with Hawpe all along in the eighth inning but thought Baldelli in the on-deck circle might convince Toronto to give Rodriguez another at-bat.

Despite the win, The Rays went only 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Translated: they could have greatly reduced my stress level by easily scoring three or four more runs. David Price picked up his 16th win, further expanding his Rays-franchise record for wins in a season and tying him for fourth in MLB. Soriano extended his league lead with his 40th save of the year. The Rays picked up their 82nd W on the year, moving them to 31 games over .500. The farmhands didn’t exactly blow the doors off the place but Navarro looked great in his return to the big club, calling a good game for Price and Soriano. Jennings looks like he has a great ability to track pitches.

Thursday is an off day, giving the boys a chance to rest and travel up to Baltimore for three games and then to Boston for a three-game set. It also means I will have nothing to do. Someone figure something out or I’m going to go nuts.
