Roxy's Gala: pinups, pole dancers, and pitbulls (pictures)

Given a choice between aiding a person on the streets or helping a dog, most Americans will choose the dog every time. We adore our canine pets because they love us as much as we love them, despite our shortcomings.

Shorty Rossi learned this lesson early in life. No matter what he was going through, be it legal trouble or his new found fame as the star of the Animal Plant show, Pit Boss, his pitbulls have always been there for him. Recently when Rossi was experiencing back problems, his pitbull Hercules stepped up to provide him some support. Now the reality show star takes Hercules everywhere as a service dog and as an ambassador for the breed.

Party Like a Pinup at Roxy's Gala was organized to support the charity programs, Pinups for Pit Bulls and Pit Stop Bully's Rescue.  Roxy, the mascot for The Don Vicente De Ybor Historic Inn, inspired the hotel's owner, Tessa Shiver, to host Roxy's 10th birthday as a themed party to raise money and awareness for the plight of pitbulls. As Rossi pointed out, Hercules is just one example of how pitbulls

become exactly what their owners want them to be. If their owners want these dogs to be fighters or lethal guard dogs, that's what they'll become. But, if their owners are kind and loving, pitbulls will reciprocate this affection tenfold.

Even though Shorty was the guest celebrity, the real stars of the evening were Hercules and Roxy (who wore a tutu).

When these dog's were in the room, everyone wanted to be near them, to take pictures with them, and to touch them. The raw animal charisma of pitbulls was apparent when they stole attention from the featured burlesque acts---at least until the performers from the Rock N Body studio had two dancers spinning around the pole, or the burlesque troupe Le Teaze began their side-by-side strip tease.

At $65, tickets weren't cheap, but attendants got an hour of an open bar, two buffet lines of food, free candy and jello shots, and a chance to break out their swing-themed costumes and dance moves. If guests wanted to give even more, they could bid on the silent auction, which featured things like dance lessons by Le Teaze or Rock N Body. Die-hard dog lovers could even pay to be licked by a pitbull. There are very few people, celebrity or not, who I would pay to lick me, and yet guests kept lining up to put their faces within inches of the enormous jaws of a pitbull to receive some sloppy loving.
