Guided Hike at Weedon Island Preserve- Every Saturday; 9-11 am. Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the Preserve are held on most Saturdays of the month. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Be sure to bring water and a snack for this 2-hour hike. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Reserve your space by 2 pm on the Friday prior to the tour of choice. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Guided Hike at Brooker Creek Preserve- Every Saturday; 9-11 am. Take a walk through time each Saturday morning on a guided hike along the Education Center Trail. Join us for this 0.75 mile walk as we look at how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Pre-registration is required by 12:00 noon on the Friday before the hike. Admission: Free. Habitat for Humanity Showcase Home Green Open House- Saturday, July 31; 10 am. Join in for a special peek into Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County's first green subdivision. With volunteer labor and help from the homeowners, they've built LEED certified townhomes. Take an exclusive tour and find out what Habitat is all about. Volunteers and homeowners needed. Proper Composting: Composting in Florida-Saturday, July 31, 1-3pm. Start your food forest, raised beds, or basic garden with organic nutrients. Composting helps to create a strong foundation in which your plants will flourish. Permaculturalist, Robert Segundo dispels composting myths and presents a variety of composting options for the Florida landscape. Attendees will learn proper composting methods for quality and safety. Composting is an integral part in remediation of waste and reusing of vital nutrients. Topics to include: proper composting, composting manure and meat, creating a home compost, troubleshooting and the future of composting. The course will take place on Saturday, July 31, from 1-3pm.
