The Jude Law and Forest Whitaker action/gore-fest Repo Men comes to DVD this week. Creative Loafing sent The Rabid One to see the movie during its theatrical release, and he had some interesting things to say in his review about how the characters were truly lacking and the gore was trying to make up for it. I generally agree with the Rabid One, and Repo Men is no exception. You have to give the audience a reason to root for a hero, and director Miguel Sapochnik and star Jude Law simply dont deliver. As a result, the action and impending doom (plus the gallons upon gallons of blood) simply dont have the impact they could have.
Yes, Forrest Whitaker is great in the movie, Liev Schrieber is always decent, and the action is well done if a bit over the top. Adding it all up, Repo Men is simply an ok flick that lacks a fulfilling ending.
But what of the special features?
The Special Features on the disc are enjoyable despite feeling extremely rushed. The Union Commercials, advertisements the company in the movie used to talk suckers into buying their organs, is a really good parody of the marketing you see on TV everyday. There is also a humorous look into the special effects, in which director Miguel Sapochnik keeps asking the writer to ask him a question about the scene so he doesn't spend all his time explaining what was going on. When Sapochnik does get the explanation rolling, however, you can feel the sense of pride he had in his film.
There are also a few deleted scenes that feel thrown in, mainly because they consist of scenes in the movie extended with a small snippet that wasnt in the original release. (A little explanation as to why the footage was cut in the first place might have helped.) Finally, there is the directors commentary, which again is a little bit awkward. Listening to the director and the writer talk back and fourth, there isnt much insight despite a few moments that are quite entertaining.
Overall, if a gory action flick sounds like your thing, give it a rent or look for it on HBO. But a so-so movie and a lack of special features in this package mean I would say pass on Repo Men.
Showing 1-1 of 1
I thought Repo Men was a pretty interesting movie but I definitely agree that it should be passed over. Since I subscribe to HBO on my DISH Network employee services I was able to watch the movie online at DISHOnline.com on my PC when I was away from home. Glad that DISH and HBO offer such a great feature so I didn't have to pay anything extra to watch this crazy movie! Lol. Check out the website here http://beta.dishonline.com/?utm_source=dis…, even non DISH subscribers can watch free movies, shows and clips! :)
