Jarretta Hamilton taught fourth grade at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Florida (near Orlando) for more than a year when she was fired after asking for maternity leave. She admitted to the principle, Rod Ennis, that she conceived three weeks before her marriage. The Christian school fired Hamilton on the grounds that she violated the school's moral standards by engaging in premarital sex.

The school doesn't dispute the reason for firing Hamilton. In a letter to Hamilton's lawyer, the school wrote: "Jarretta

was asked not to return because she chose to disregard these [morality] standards and have sex outside of marriage, an immoral action."

Ennis claims Hamilton signed and agreed to the school's moral code. Hamilton claims she didn't fully understand the school's policy on premarital sex.

Hamilton is suing under federal gender discrimination laws, a state marriage discrimination law, and for invasion of privacy. She seeks compensation for lost wages and emotional distress.

Hamilton's discrimination case is flimsy. The school employs other pregnant women and Hamilton did sign the school's morality code. She may have more luck with the invasion of privacy claim, as the school had no grounds for informing the staff, parents of students, and students that Hamilton was fired for fornicating.
