Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview upcoming arts events to mark your calendars for. Next week, Pericles: Prince of Tires is back in town, and arguably better than ever. In this modern rawk musical adaptation of Shakespeares sordid story about the Prince of Tyre, Pericles becomes Perry, a New Jersey mobster but theres just as much double-crossing, treachery, betrayal and death as the Bard intended.
This weeklong revival (the show premiered at Jobsite last August) has something new for first-timers and fans alike: the set has been stripped down, the plot and dialogue have been tweaked, and this time, youll be witnessing a play thats in preparation for the bright lights of NYC: Pericles is set to stage at New York's HERE Arts Center immediately after its Tampa engagement. Perrys epic adventure is accompanied by a punk rock score crafted by Joe Popp (who also made an appearance at CLs Sensory Overload last weekend), who also narrates the underground foray into the mad world of the mafia. Which, of course, doesnt actually exist. Im hanging up the phone now. April 7-11, 8 p.m. Weds.-Sat., 4 p.m. Sun., Shimberg Playhouse, Straz Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N. MacInnes Place, Tampa, $15, jobsitetheater.org.
