There are times when awkward situations are dazzling to the eye. You dont really want to look, but somehow youre still compelled to do so. Shes Out of My League is not one of those situations. What we have here is another lazy attempt at emulating a Judd Apatow movie. That's bad, but not nearly as egregious as just being plain unfunny. And failed attempts at humor are what She's Out Of My League succeeds at best.
Shes Out of My League is a typical fish-out-of-water tale about a rather unseemly nerd (Knocked Ups Jay Baruchel) who finds himself all atwitter after a fateful encounter with a gorgeous woman (newcomer Alice Eve) who exemplifies the films title. Not only does the knockout give him the time of day, she actually expresses interest in the lad which quickly leads to a series of uncomfortable scenes. Can the boy who only ranks a five successfully land a hard 10? And more important: If he does, will we really even care?
Sadly, the answer is a resounding no. Shes Out of My League tries hard to be a witty Judd Apatow movie but fails to be anything other than an uninspired clone. In order for the unnatural romance between the leads to be the slightest bit believable, a certain amount of chemistry needed to be apparent between Baruchel and Eve. There is exactly none. Piss-poor casting made this unavoidable. Im sorry, but Baruchel brings nothing to the table that would allow me to suspend my disbelief enough to fall for this scripted happenstance. A better choice would likely have been Apatow lap-dog Seth Rogen, but Judd already made that movie.
Laughs are few and far between during the films 105-minute running time. There's one scene involving male body hair removal that elicited uproarious laughter from those in attendance, but it again left me longing for a film Id already seen. The supporting cast, including T.J.Miller (Cloverfield) and Best Week Ever regular Jessica St. Clair, do their best to inflate the popped balloon that is the film's humor, but they can't blow life into this tepid endeavor.
Shes Out of My League is a four desperately trying to catch the 10 of, say, Knocked Up. There is an absence of heart, an absence of humor, and an absence of creativity that will leave you cold. The movie has decent enough intentions, but it just doesn't come through as promised. It might be worth a rental, but I wouldnt advise you rush to the theaters this weekend. Instead, stay home and watch your favorite Judd Apatow movies. Thats what She's Out of My League will leave you longing to do, anyway.
