On Saturday, the Ybor Market put on its yearly Flan Fest, an event centered around celebrating the creamy dessert with everything from a bake-off to a flan-eating race.
28 competitors lined up with traditional and non-traditional variations of this cultural staple of local cusine to be judged on taste, presentation, and texture.
Entries included flans large and small, with mix-ins including citrus, cheese, alcohol, fruit, and even bacon (yes! bacon flan!).
For $5, spectators were able to purchase VIP passes into the competition area, allowing them to sample as much of the competing desserts as their hearts desired.
The competitors ranged from 13-year-old Miranda Rametta to local chef Maria Griffin, whose confections can be found in several Bay-area restaurants.
However, in the end, no one could overtake Jenna Lociero's third generation family recipe in the traditional category or Angelina Noble's non-traditional "Chocolate Dream" flan.
For all the enthusiasts who still wanted more after the winners were announced, the Saturday Market hosted an assortment of flan-centric activities, including four flan walks and a no-hands flan eating contest, which after a few cheaters and false starts was won by a man who seemingly inhaled his portion.
Though the winning chefs took home cash prizes and plaques, the award for the flan eating contest was a $10 to spend anywhere in the market. As for the flan walks, the prizes, of course, were complimentary boxes of freshly baked flan.
