Musicology: Reggae rocks The Ritz this February with The Expendables, Rebelution and others (with video)

Alright ganja lovers, grab your rolling papers and Bob Marley t-shirts because several reggae rock outfits will soon be bringing their funky beats to The Ritz Ybor in the months to come.
First up are The Expendables, a California-based band that mixes laid back reggae with punk rock aggression and heavy metal guitar riffs to create summer-time classics like "Sacrifice," "Bowl for Two" and "Down, Down, Down."
The Expendables have been together for more than a decade and spent the summer of ‘09 touring with 311. In August they returned to the studio to record their fifth album with the help of the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, who has also produced music by other reggae rock outfits -- Sublime, Pepper and Slightly Stoopid.
The foursome fully embraces a surf, skate and party mentality, and will be bringing their fun to the Ritz on Fri., Feb. 5, as headliners of the Ladera Skateboards Winter Blackout 2010 tour. The lineup also includes Passafire, Iration, Pour Habit and Roots Down Below. The show starts at 7 p.m.; tickets are $17 in advance and $19 at the door. (Video and more shows after the jump.)

Rebelution, SOJA and Zion I bring their 2010 winter tour to the the Ritz a few weeks later. While Rebelution and SOJA are more reggae-inspired, Zion I (pronounced "Zion eye"), lays down poetic rhymes against hip-hop beats combined with live instrumentation.
Of the three acts, I am most excited about SOJA simply because I've had the chance to see them numerous times and they never disappoint with their rastafied blend of original lyrics, mellow melodies and a steady drum-and-bass backbeat. Listening to SOJA is one of those times where you can close your eyes and picture yourself on a tropical island somewhere, sitting on the beach, watching the waves roll and sipping a red stripe, just coolin' out.
So, get your dancin' flip-flops and patchwork pants on because these vibes will have your feet moving and your body swaying all night. The Rebelution/Soja/Zion show is Thurs., Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 at the door. The tour makes its way to the House of Blues in Orlando the following night for those of us who have to work early Friday morning and are unable to take full advantage of a Thursday night show.
