The Tampa based mixed martial arts promotion Art of Fighting (AOF) will host an amateur International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) kickboxing and submission grappling event, Rumble at the Ritz, at the Ritz in Ybor City on Jan. 30, 2010. This martial arts competition is AOF's first attempt to support the sanctioning of amateur MMA in the state of Florida, which has been on the Florida State Boxing Commission's agenda since early 2009, so far without any results.

“It's an unfair advantage for out of state fighters who fight at pro MMA events in Florida. Some of these fighters have 30 amateur fights before they go professional and are matched up against someone stepping into the cage for the first time. Florida fighters deserve the same opportunity in experiencing fighting before it goes against their professional record permanently," said Nick Smith, AOF match maker.

While Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White officially declared that he is not a fan of amateur MMA at the UFC 104 press conference (see the video after the break!), most of the 44 states sanctioning professional MMA seem to agree.

According to the ABC Boxing Commission which serves as unifying body of all state boxing commissions, there are currently only 17 states regulating amateur MMA through the State Athletic Commissions, while five even declared it illegal and the rest pretty much just left it up to independent organizations to oversee the events. Aside from the obvious safety risks for fighters competing in different states this lack of unity clearly makes the promotion of MMA across state lines quite impossible while creating unfair and dangerous advantages for some.

"We want to establish a way for mixed martial arts fighters in Florida to gain experience via the ISKA before they make a life altering decision to become a professional fighter. You are going to see some hungry fighters in the ring on January 30, there are some great fighters just looking for the experience they need to be confident as a professional,” said Smith.

Hopefully AOF's efforts will get the ball rolling and motivate the Executive Director of the Florida State Boxing Commission, Thomas Molloy, to pass the buck, or rather the bill for the regulation of amateur MMA in the state.

Tickets for Rumble at the Ritz will be available at the door for $20 and VIP seating for $35. Early birds will be rewarded with free  Art of Fighting 7 T-Shirts.
