We all eat. Be thoughtful about what you eat by attending the movie Fresh: New Thinking About What We're Eating. It may change your life about what and how you eat.

Some say the movie changed their lives in small or larger ways.

Julie O’Connor of Gulfport saw the film in September decided to really check out those eggs she’d been thoughtfully purchasing. What did organic, free range, etc., mean to her choice about which eggs to buy? She found that, sadly, chicken farmers practice a version of what Upton Sinclair wrote about in The Jungle, a story about the horrible practices and conditions of the American meat packing industry in the early 1900s.

Julie also discovered a number of St. Petersburg Old Northeast “farmers” who are legally raising chickens, with their neighbors’ okay. Thanks to Julie, the farmers and the hens, I’m now part of a coop that enjoys eggs laid the day before and getting to know new people with a similar passion about a sustainable planet. You can really taste the difference in the eggs too.

We are also learning that cold chickens don’t lay as many eggs (can you empathize?), so we’ve added that factor when learning about a cold snap. Taking these very special “neighbors” gifts in the form of deviled eggs to holiday parties has been a big hit. Stories about “paying it forward” move virally.

By seeing Fresh, not only will you become more informed about where the food you and your families eat come from, you will meet others also interested in conscious choices about food.

Tom Tito, VP of the Bartlett Park Neighborhood Association, will tell about the association’s free Victory Garden Classes and the Paris Garden Installation Project. You’ll also meet others, who are part of the “slow food” movement in the region. Making this a really special evening and “paying it forward” is the invitation to bring toys for children in Pinellas County.

Conservative or liberal, we have eating in common. Mostly, we don’t think much about it. Fresh has been circulating around Tampa Bay this fall and will repeat at 7 pm this Tuesday (December 15th) at the Repower America meeting. The meeting will be held at 146, Second St N, Suite 100 in St Pete, across from the Bay Walk parking garage entrance, to give you a picture.

Imagine the difference in 2010 as individuals and organizations check out the food they eat, make more educated choices about what they put in their mouths and the impact of those choices.

Please let us at CL Green know if and how the movie has changed you.

One person makes a difference. That includes you.
