If you think type is just another functional aspect of design, think again -- and ask the thousands who recently rioted when IKEA changed its iconic font. The Roundhouse Gallery's inaugural collection, TYPE RIOT: Letters of Intent, is a mixed media exhibit, a celebration of typography -- a vital element of design to which each of the exhibiting artists have made significant contributions, among them: Phil Holt, Bask, Jason Vivona, Blackbooks, Pale Horse, Tes One, Frank Strunk III, Johnny Vitale and many more. (Pictured: work by Jason Vivona, on display at TYPE RIOT) On display through Dec. 18; visit roundhouseart.com for more info. Roundhouse Gallery, St. Petersburg.

Opus, the UT musical theater ensemble’s winter production, includes a Manhattan medley, Vaudeville tunes, a medley from Jekyll & Hyde, and a mash-up of solos and duets from Broadway favorites. Visit ut.edu for more info. Tues., Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. Plant Hall, University of Tampa, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

Have an eco-conscious holiday at the Holiday Conservation Celebration with the help of the Florida Native Plant Society and Audubon Society, who co-host this book signing by Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, along with an evening of environmental exhibits, awards, silent auction fundraiser and door prizes. Bring tasty treats to share, along with your own plates, cups and utensils — time to get serious about sustainability! Visit pinellas.fnpschapters.org/calendar.html for more info. Tues., Dec. 8, 6:30 p.m., Pinellas County Extension, Largo, free.

The Gregorian Chant for Everyone workshop with Dr. Larry Kent, the Director of Florida Pro Musica, offers a historical introduction and singing lessons on this beautiful music of the Middle Ages. Trained voices and music reading skills are unnecessary; all voices are welcome. Visit franciscancentertampa.org for more info. Tues., Dec. 8, 7-9 p.m., The Franciscan Center, Tampa, $20.
