While it may seem like winning the lottery to land an opening gig for rock legend Roger Daltrey, the boys in Paper Zoo might tell a different story. Playing to a nearly empty house last night, the L.A.-based band poured out blood, sweat and feedback to win over an audience that seemed somewhat indifferent to their performance. This mostly middle-aged crowd was there to hear Daltrey sing Who Are You and Pictures Of Lily, not be subjected to some opening act that didn’t even make it into the show announcements.  Unfortunately for Paper Zoo, this is an all too often occurrence for opening acts and one which they shouldn’t take personally. Hopefully they will take it in stride and caulk it up to playing their dues.

Consisting of Allister Izen on guitar and vocals, William (Billy) Thomas Wesley III on bass, Martin Lopez on keyboards and Monte Dyaami Najera on drums, Paper Zoo manages to shrug off references to their youthful age by banging out well-crafted tunes that seem beyond their years. Careful listeners will hear influences of Sergeant Pepper-era-Beatles, some Zappa and even a little Who in their music. It’s not the same three-chord, mindless dribble turned out by many young bands these days, and it will probably only get better as the guys get some years and experience under their belts.

You can pick up their debut EP “Paper Zoo” on iTunes for a mere $3.99. For more information, go to the bands website or Facebook page for the latest details and show information.
