What awaits at the end of of a two hour-long, cushy Jet Blue flight north; a 10-minute AirTrain ride west, a 55-minute subway ride uptown; and a climb up a particularly steep and stained flight of stairs?  New York City! (In my best Pace Picante Sauce voice), and a bottle of Poland Spring water, of course.  I just returned from the Big Apple last night, and in between shameless gawks at all the pretty buildings, I managed to survey the fashions of the hip and uninhibited.

See what they're wearing right now, or at least yesterday, in NYC — below the jump.

New York City women strut down Fifth Avenue in sadistic stilettos by Christian Louboutin.  The iconic, red-soled shoes paint the sidewalks like koi while their brave owners attempt to avoid the fresh wad of chewing gum between them and Henri Bendel.

I observed a lot of women in cotton rompers or tank dresses in color-blocked palettes.  These stylish fashionistas paired their

onesies with gladiator flats in black, and bold gold jewelry in shapes inspired by nature. One accessory that was never amiss was the hobo bag, either in flesh tones or floral-patterned cotton.

The men adopt more of a vintage geek chic approach: thick rimmed black glasses, narrow-fitting plaid vintage button-down shirts; dark, slim jeans; and suede loafers.

In New York, you never know when you're going home, so a lot of guys sport backpacks, sling bags or messenger bags. In preparation for whatever challenges the city may bring, the typical "murse," or man-purse, is stuffed with an umbrella, iPhone, water, snacks, headphones — and if you're an artist like so many NYC transplants, a sample of your work (or at least a stack of business cards).

There's a certain swagger that emanates from a real New Yorker.  Confidence coupled with access to the best shopping in the world makes for an enviable fashion sense.
