Well, it dawned on me yesterday, as I checked my email for the 127th time, that finding a job is very similar to finding a mate.
There are all these sources for finding Mr. Right. There are the online dating sites, the singles networking events, the family/friend referrals. Similarly, when looking for a job, you refer to the online job banks, the networking events and job fairs, and leads from your family and friends.
Besides for the obvious correlations, there are the emotional similarities. The waiting... waiting for a call from your coworker's dreamy brother-in-law, whom you met at dinner last weekend... waiting for a call from the recruiter that you emailed your resume to two days ago; you are certain this is the perfect position for you. The anxiety you feel during that first call with him... wanting to say the right things... the anxiety you feel during the first phone interview... wanting to answer every question perfectly. The excitement you feel leading to the first date, selecting the appropriate outfit and fantasizing about what's next... the excitement you feel leading to the first interview, selecting the appropriate outfit and fantasizing about the offer. OR the disappointment you feel when he never calls... the disappointment you feel when the recruiter never calls. The frustration you feel when your excited preparation is followed by a cancellation or a very forgettable first date... the frustration you feel when the recruiter calls to say the position has been put on hold or the first interview leaves you questioning your fit. The emotional ups and downs, they are the same!
I keep reminding myself that all the effort and the disenchantment of dating paid off, as I found my Mr. Right. Hopefully the same is true for finding the right job.
