WFLA/NewsChannel 8 slated to air anti-gay infomercial tonight after St. Pete Pride

Both Equality Florida and St. Pete Pride are asking supporters to call WFLA/NewsChannel 8 and protest the airing at 7 p.m. tonight of the hour-long anti-gay infomercial Speechless: Silencing the Christians. Sponsored by the American Family Association, it trots out AFA's usual lies about "special rights" and "the radical homosexual activist agenda," and has already been condemned by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), which supported previous efforts to postpone or prevent airing of the show in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Columbus, Ohio.  I contacted WFLA-TV for comment this afternoon about the questionable timing of airing such a program the day of St. Pete Pride, but I was told that the only people who could address the issue were in the programming department and were not available over the weekend.

Read an excerpt from the Equality Florida alert after the break.

Other networks in Michigan and Ohio have refused to air this dangerous and misleading piece of homophobic propaganda, but not this station.  Instead WFLA NBC 8 is choosing to make money off the demonization and dehumanization of LGBT people in Tampa Bay by running this 60 minute paid program.

To add insult to injury, they've chosen to air this hateful piece on the same day as St. Pete Pride, the largest pride celebration in Florida.  So, while tens of thousands are celebrating diversity and inclusion, WFLA will be broadcasting homophobia.   It is an outrageous attack on our families.

Just as we are on the cusp of historic change - a federal hate crimes law, protections for LGBT workers against job discrimination - extremist groups like the AFA are launching a well-funded national campaign of hatred and fear to halt our progress.

This program recycles familiar lies: that hate crime laws will "do away with our freedom of speech," or that pastors will be "criminalized for sharing the love of Jesus Christ."  (In fact, the proposed federal hate crimes law explicitly states that it only applies to physical violence - not speech.)

Contact the WFLA assignment desk NOW and demand that they pull this dangerous and bigoted piece off the air.

And here's an excerpt from St. Pete Pride alert.

Pride Day is one day a year when the Tampa Bay area comes together to

celebrate the diversity and contribution of our GLTBQ citizens.

Apparently, one day is one day too many.

WFLA Channel 8 has made the decision to air an anit-gay special this

evening instead of regular programming. We at St. Pete Pride believe

that on this day of all days 40 years after Stonewall that the

contributions of the GLBTQ community to Tampa Bay deserves more

respect than this.

If you feel strongly about the airing of this special, please call

Channel 8 and let them know what you think. Their number is

813-221-5788.

Thank you and enjoy St. Pete Pride!

Given the right wing bias of Media General, this isn't actually much of a surprise.

I'm not up on this program , but when I saw that gays and lesbians were upset about this program. And I saw in the paper it was a slap in the face to gay/lesbian movement, good. The creator or God made man and woman to be a companion to each other and reproduce. When I see 2 gay animals reproduce or humans.I might start thinking of this problem. What it's going to take is someone (like me )to get up on national stage and or the paper and tell people what gays and lesbians do in real life,it's nasty to a good american citizen. No, I wasn't one of those freaky people.I wished I could have the money to run for president of th U.S. of America.I would not say "Change" I would " Get Back to Basics " like football teams, nba, all teams that need to get back to a winning season.I realize this isn't a good example, but I would not open my mouth and make promises I could not keep.Let's help the american people get homes, car, etc, to stimulate the economy the president says. How am I supposed to pay for all of this when I don't have a job, dah. There is over $350 billion in grants , not loans the government or the officals someone elected give out every year.Let's count 350,000,000,000= 350,000 millionaires or at $25,000 per family household their are guide lines this will equal 40 X $25,000= $1,000,000 ,350,000 x $1,000,000 or let,s say 14,000,000 @ $25,000=$350,000,000,000.Yes I've done the math as they say.Put grants on hold for 2-3 years.People make money, then they spend money, the economy pickes up and we start getting back to normal. The other thing we need to worry about is the longer this recession goes on the more people will hold onto their money and this will put us back into a rut.It all comes back to " We The People " back to the basics and " In God WE Trust "it's called God's perfect plan if we don't let some guys or girls decide they can't get along with the opposite sex and decide to invent something.Maybe these people are right they, they, they did come from monkeys, the only problem is moneys don't have sex with the same gender. Thanks for your time and letting someone speak.I wished I could be more help to nation.I'll send you my name & address for futher questions if wanted , but please don't let this get into the wrong hands or you will have another story to cover.Miles, against the gay, lesbian movement. This will not be helpful to my " Back To The Basics " career. Miles Holder 4200 Capri Street Sebring , Fl 33872-2103 863-382-8689 Home / Fax milesholder@embarqmail.com
