Green office tip of the week: reduce paper at the source

Let's continue to "green your office" with another great tip to "reduce". In my last post, I talked about the importance of starting at the source. This week, we're going to focus on reducing paper before it enters your office in the first place. Less paper in means less paper out - and less time figuring out what to do with that stack of junk mail and catalogs you receive at your workplace each and every day! Saving time means saving money so we have an extra incentive here, right?
Green Office Tip of the Week from your CL Green Office Specialist:
Ok, so this is going to be easy and painless, I promise. The best part about it is that this service is free! Go to the National Do Not Mail List website. You can click on one checkbox to remove your name from all mailing lists or you can select specific mailing lists to be removed from. You will find 10 major categories of lists from catalogs and credit card applications to charitable requests and telephone offerings. To register, enter your name, address and email address. Click the checkbox to remove your name, hit submit and a confirming email is headed to your inbox. Click on the link in the confirming email you receive and you are done! The entire process just takes a few minutes. It may take several weeks or months for your name to be removed from the mailing lists you selected but you can feel good right away about the green step forward you just took!
If you want to help your friends benefit from this service, there's an option to enter their email addresses for a one-time invite to be sent to them. Why does the National Do Not Mail List site provide this service? Because they are direct marketers themselves and they know that mail order companies don't want to waste their money sending mail to people who don't want to receive it. They also clearly state that they will not ever add your name to other email lists without your request. The National Do Not Mail List is a private firm and is not the same as the National Do Not Call Registry www.donotcall.gov/, a free government service which gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home.
So take a few minutes to register with the National Do Not Call Registry and reduce by keeping that junk mail away from your office mailbox!

It's a bit misleading to call this a national Do Not Mail list. Whereas the Do Not Call list was enforced by federal law-- telemarketers who violated it faced penalties-- this list is not at all enforceable, and you even have to wonder if the information you give them is entirely safe. American's personal information is often bought and sold by junk mailers, and sometimes when you request to get off their list, they'll simply sell your info to some other junk mailer. Sign the petition at donotmail.org that calls for a truly enforceable Do Not Mail Registry.
Will, thanks for posting your comment. The DirectMail.com National Do Not Mail List site addresses your concerns in an upfront way in their FAQ's. That being said, I am happy to learn about the donotmail.org site petition in support of an enforceable Do Not Mail List. This is truly needed! The donotmail.org site also has a tool/form that helps you remove your name from junk mailers' lists http://www.donotmail.org/form.php?id=50. The form places the information you input into a letter to send to the junk mailer. The downside here is additional paper usage and postage where the DirectMail.com Do Not Mail List is managed electronically.
