So if you have shopped at any grocery store in the past year (and I'm sure you have), you must have noticed the complete take-over of the dairy aisle by Greek yogurt. The brands are different; there's Chobani, Fage, Oikos and Voskos, but the idea is the same. Basically, all Greek yogurt is strained plain yogurt.
When you strain yogurt in a cheesecloth for about six hours, you drain off all the liquid and only the "yogurt cheese" remains. This, in turn, nearly doubles the protein content of the yogurt (one cup of yogurt contains a whopping 20 grams of protein!) and creates a much thicker, denser product. It also costs a pretty penny! For a four-cup serving of Fage, most supermarkets charge about $5.69, whereas a four-cup serving of regular yogurt sells for only $2.99. What's the deal?
Well all you have to do is try it to understand. My personal favorite is Fage and, yes, I do pay $5.69 for a four-cup serving because it just is that amazing! So thick, rich and, dare I say, sexy? Here are my favorite uses for Fage---
A half cup portion stirred into a bowl of rolled oats soaked in a little water overnight. Top with nut butter and a banana and you have a dynamite protein packed breakfast!
A serving topped with whole grain cereal, peanut butter and raspberry preserves.
And my latest favorite way to eat this yogurt of the gods is mixed with a serving of PB2. What is PB2 you ask? PB2 is nothing else but powdered peanut butter. You can find it online or in select stores and when mixed with yogurt, it creates a thick peanut butter mousse that you wouldn't even believe is actually healthy for you.
To sum it all all, Greek yogurt is a health foodie's dream. And the possibilities are endless... however, don't say I didn't warn you because it IS an expensive addiction!

Well done Jenna!!! Yes, I am a Greek yogurt addict myself, worth every penny IMO.
I can't get greek yogurt here...simply...cannot. I'v searched high and low and emailed around to various companies...none of them ship to Canada so I guess I need to whip out my cheesecloth and spend some hours making it :(
I agree that this stuff is worth the extra expense. It's so dense that it really fills you up unlike regular yogurt and the taste is so creamy! That peanut butter mousse looks amazing!
Posts like these are why I cannot give up dairy (slightly lactose intolerant)...those greek yogurt meals/snacks look divine. I must try them out. Thanks for this article!
Great post, Jenna! I am in love with Greek yogurt and usually have some everyday!
Yum! I love greek yogurt, you've gave me some new ways to try it out
This was a great introductory post to Greek yogurt! Good job, Jenna!
I tried Greek yogurt for the first time several weeks ago (Fage 0% was my brand of choice), specifically because you eat so much of it, and I LOVED it! So worth every penny! Great post, Jenna!
Tzatziki is also one of my favorite ways of eating Greek Yogurt! However, Jenna did a great job of highlighting some lesser known ways of enjoying it! Especially that PB2 mousse!
Jocelyn- We can't get greek yogurt here either (Guam) so I strain my own. SO WORTH IT! Now if only I could get PB2. Jenna- Great post, can't wait to see what else is up your sleeve!
All the varieties of the Chobani brand are fantastic, but try the peach, it rocks!
Jocelyn, Samantha, and everyone! There's no need to break out the cheesecloth and rig up some odd way to drain your yogurt. Donvier/Cuisipro makes a fine-mesh strainer just for this: http://www.amazon.com/Cuisipro-Donvier-Yogurt-Cheese-Maker/dp/B000064841 This way you can keep it in the fridge (keep it cool), enclosed (no funny smells), and drain it as much or as little as you like. A couple of hours makes a good 'greek' (strained) yogurt. Leave it in for 24 and you get an extremely thick, cream-cheese-like consistency. Yum! and a good investment-- you can save hundreds of dollars a year if you've been buying the Fage brand. Sorry if I sound like a commercial but I love mine and use it all the time. Looking forward to trying it with PB2-- thanks for the tip, Jenna!
I have not eaten dairy for years, but I also never tried Greek yogurt when I did eat dairy. Maybe I'll give it a shot! Thanks Jenna!
Great post, Jenna! I'm going to have to give Greek yogurt a try. Looking forward to more of your articles. Thanks for the ideas!
This makes me want to do a Fage run on the spot. I've never had Greek yogurt but you've definitely convinced me to give it a try. Thank you. Blessings - Debbie
Jenna! Love Fage!! Eat it every morning with a little honey! Love the new ideas! Anne.
I was just trying to figure out the difference between the yogurts. I will be picking some up and try to find that PB2- sounds delightful!!!Thanks Jenna- can't wait to see what else you come up with
