The Penis Diatribes: are we ready for a male version of the Vagina Monologues?

With his struggle to find producers to back his new play, "

question, "is the vaginal more politically correct than the penis?"

There's no denying our cultures fascination with penises. They are everywhere. One hundred story high monuments to manhood dominate our city skylines. Our government is in a perpetual big dick contest, threatening enemies with our superior phallic weaponry. But, just because these images of manhood overrun our everyday life doesn't mean audiences are ready to embrace them on stage.

Consider this. Even though we now have a black president, most will agree that a certain degree of racism is still inherent in American society. Because of this inequality, it is perfectly acceptable for a black comedian like

Chris Rock to tell racist jokes about both black and white people at the Academy Awards. But, if a comedian like Larry the Cable Guy tried the same stunt, at the very least the audience would just feel uncomfortable. Traditionally, oppressed groups are allowed more freedom on stage, as these voices are underrepresented in everyday society.

This artistic double standard, may help explain why a play like "The Vagina Monologues" can earn $100 million while "The Penis Diatribes" cannot find a stage or producer. While female voices are still underrepresented in our culture, they are allowed to take center stage in a play. This speaks to the fact that gender inequality is still a major issue in our society. We'll know sexual equality has truly come when a penis and a vagina can have a dialogue on stage, and no one shows up to see it because these voices won't be saying anything new or controversial.

My point is this. It may not be that penises are politically incorrect. Rather, audiences may get enough of listening to dicks all day that they don't want to watch them onstage.

Of course this is assuming much. During this economic slump, playhouses may not be interested in taking a risk on an unknown play. And, of course, there is the possibility that "The Penis Diatribes," just isn't as good as the, "The Vagina Monologues."

You be the judge. "The Penis Diatribes: It's harder than you think to be a dick," will be performed at Coconuts Comedy Club, 9331 Adamo Dr. Tampa, FL, May 7th and 14th at 8pm. Tickets are $10.

I just wanted to say a few things.. besides, "I can't wait to see this show!" When you say that The Vagina Monologues are so much more accepted than something like The Penis Diatrbies.. I want to say I disagree somewhat. Yes, MANY theatre companies and women, etc. have put on SUCH a great show by Eve Ensler all across the world and do it for a great cause, but even the word "vagina" still isn't as accepted as you might think. I've seen articles where productions that have had to change the title 'The Vagina Monologues' to 'The Hoo-ha Monologues' because some people didn't feel comfortable with the V-word. 'The Vagina Monologues' was just recently performed at The James McCabe Theater [where some of the Penis Diatribes performances are taking place] through the Village Players and even that BARELY got an audience. Though, I will say, it DID surprise a few people who had a totally different outlook on what the show was going to be about. Let me tell you, there were definitely tears in some audience members' eyes during one of the monologues! All and all, I really can't wait to see what 'The Penis Diatribes' has to offer. I just hope it lasts longer than 5 minutes with a 15 minute intermission!
