Should FSU's Bobby Bowden resign?

Posted by David Warner on Sat, Mar 7, 2009 at 10:05 AM

The Tampa Tribune's Martin Fennelly thinks he should, and he says so in a front-page story today with the headline, "Bobby, It's Time To Do The Right Thing."

The reason, of course, is that FSU's athletics department, which Bowden's football teams have covered with glory, is now covered in, well, shit. Because a bunch of athletes allegedly cheated on, among other things, online music quizzes. They had to cheat on online music quizzes? Sheesh.

Here's Fennelly's opening salvo:

It's time.

It's time for Bobby Bowden, who is Florida State athletics, to do a far, far better thing, which is saying something given all he has given FSU, college football and plain folk everywhere.

It's time to go.

I take no pleasure in saying that. None.

But the other shoe has dropped. The NCAA shoe. And it's steel-toed.

Fennelly goes on like that, pretty steel-toed himself. (I like that about Martin Fennelly.)

What do you think? And why should we care?

Martin Fennelly should do the right thing and retire from that Gators mouthpiece rag.

I agree with you Bill. Who cares what Mike Fennelly thinks..Bobby Bowden is the ONLY person who should make the decision when to step away. His contribution to college athletics and producing stand-up gentleman and great athletes like Derrick Brooks and Warrick Dunn, who the city of Tampa just pissed on is a living legend, and has done much more good than bad. Big city Gator-lovers should have no say about anything in NOLE NATION. PS- I live in Tampa.

Im at UF and 2 years ago I had a class with 8 football players in the class. One is a friend from high scholl and I wont give his name because he is still on the team and will be a senior and I get wasted with him some times, but never during the season. They went to class on the first day only and the 3 times there were test. I asked him how he was gonna pass and he told me they didnt have to go to school because they already had the 3 test to study from and the TA did not take roll anyhow. They told the players not to get a A and miss 10-15 questions on purpose so nobody could say nothing but everyone already knew whats up anyhow. I asked him for a copy of the final but he said no because he could get in trouble. I heard they all got b's without going to class and taking notes and I got a c and I went to almost every class. Thats not fair and I think most schools let players get answers to test and pass around handouts with the important stuff on it and many players cheat too. YOUR ARTICLE REGARDING COACH BOWDEN WAS DESPICABLE. YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE AT ALL TO SUPPORT YOUR OUTRAGEOUS CONDEMNATION OF THE MAN. ONLY AT THE VERY LAST DID YOU ALLOW FOR THE FACT THAT THIS HAPPENS AT ALMOST EVERY SCHOOL. YOUR POINT WITH REGARD TO THE YEARS AT SAMFORD COULD BE DEBATED, BUT TO CRUCIFY THE MAN WITH VILE INSULT IS NOT TOLERABLE. I KNOW BOBBY PERSONALLY AND HE IS AND NEVER HAS BEEN WHAT YOU DESCRIBE IN FRONT OF OR ABSENT A CAMERA CREW. HE HAPPENS TO ENJOY A VERY WARM RELATIONSHIP WITH COACH PATERNO AS WELL. I WISH JOE PA NOTHING BUT THE BEST. FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR OWN IGNORANT EGO YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE RIGHT OF FAIRNESS FOR A TRULY GREAT MAN WHO HAS DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO BE EVEN MORE THAN A COACH TO THESE KIDS, OFTENTIMES FILLING THE ROLE OF THE FATHER THEY NEVER HAD. IF A TRUE REVIEW WERE EVER PERFORMED OF EVERY UNIVERSITY PROGRAM AND WHAT REALLY GOES ON, I GREATLY SUSPECT THAT YOUR SENSELESS SKEWERING OF THIS MORE DESERVING MAN WOULD RESULT IN QUITE A VINDICATION OF HIM AND A SCOLDING OF YOU. I DON'T KNOW OF ONE CONTEMPORARY OF MINE WHO HASN'T TOLD ME OF MUCH WORSE VIOLATIONS AT THEIR ALMA MATERS REGARDLESS OF WHAT SCHOOL THEY ATTENDED. YOU KNOW THIS AS WELL. EVERYONE DOES. BUT YET YOU TARNISH WITH SWORD(ED) PEN A LIFETIME OF ACHIEVEMENT AND SOLID CHARACTER. GIVE US A BREAK WITH YOUR " CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT " HYPOCRISY AS YOU ROB A GREAT MAN OF HIS DIGNITY. WHY DON'T YOU "STEP UP" AND WRITE A LEGITIMATE ARTICLE ABOUT WHAT ALL STUDENTS/ATHLETES ARE DOING ACROSS THE NATION? WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE A COACH IN THIS NEW WORLD OF SHAMELESSNESS AND DISRESPECT, KIDS THAT DON'T CARE, FROM POOR REARING TO HOPELESS BACKGROUNDS AND THE COACHES GET LEFT HOLDING THE BAG. YOUR ARTICLE WAS CHEAP, TIRED AND PATHETIC. STEP UP MAN! STEP UP!

Steven, are you saying that Bowden doesn't deserve recrimination simply because other programs have done and do worse things? That seems illogical.
