Spider-Man hits Broadway

Everyone's favorite web-crawler (sorry, Charlotte) is poised to make his Broadway debut — in a musical! That's not even the crazy part. Per Variety:
Helmed by Julie Taymor ("The Lion King"), "Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark" will have music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge, both of U2. Taymor and Glen Berger ("Underneath the Lintel") pen the book.
Julie Taymor? Bono and The Edge? That's some major star-power in the playbill. My gut instint is to call all of these people insane and rant about how a Spider-Man musical is just about the dumbest fucking idea I have ever heard. Only problem: It isn't.
In a day and age where The Lion King, The Producers and Young Frankenstein can end up on the Great White Way, why not Spidey? Broadway is in such dire straits, I'm surprised producers aren't grabbing other known Hollywood products that might make a buck. (Paging Mr. Spielberg …) In other words, if this works, can a string of superhero characters crooning about a life of fighting crime be far behind?
As for the staging of Spider-Man, I'll bet the web-slinging between buildings will translate well (bungee cords!), while the core of the story (awkward teenager gets amazing powers, broods about it a lot) should easily translate to the stage. With a reported budget of $35 million, anything Taymor can dream up will become a reality.
Look for Spider-Man on stage in February 2010.
