Note: If you haven't done so already, make sure you enter our Oscar contest for a chance at free dinner and a movie from Creative Loafing. And don't miss our live-blogging of the show itself, starting 7 p.m. on Sunday night, right here on The Daily Loaf.
Now, we continue our countdown to Oscar night with a look at a major award up for grabs on Sunday. (Yesterday was Best Actor.) Today, we break down:
BEST ACTRESS
Nominees: Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married; Angelina Jolie, Changeling; Melissa Leo, Frozen River; Meryl Streep, Doubt; Kate Winslet, The Reader
Vegas odds: Its a three-way race, with Oscar all-star Streep (7-2) and newcomer Hathaway (7-2) lagging behind favorite Winslet (1-2). Wins by Jolie (18-1) or Leo (30-1) would be shocking but quite profitable.
Conventional wisdom: Its Winslets frickin time already! This is Kates sixth Oscar nomination, but the only thing shes taken home are broken dreams. Shes already nabbed a Golden Globe for The Reader; cant we put her out of her misery already?
And the Oscar goes to: Except wasnt Kate better in Revolutionary Road? In a shocking development, the Academys elderly members vote en masse for Meryl Streep, nabbing the actress her third Oscar (and first since 1983s Sophies Choice).
