AOL's Digital City site has named their picks for the best 27 burgers in the country, thoughtfully divided into nine different categories. Under the "Hometown Representatives" tag (whatever that means) St. Petersburg's own El Cap has made the grade.
Here's what they say about our own famous burger joint:
Making fresh burgers daily has been a tradition at El Cap near Tampa for decades. The burgers you'll get at this little spot are simple but juicy and delicious. This may be because the same local St. Pete family has run the spot since 1963 and burger-making has been passed down through the generations.
Juicy is an apt description for El Cap's dainty but tasty patties, usually served with the simplest of accompaniments and a basic bun. It's always shocking to see the sheer quantity of salty liquid pour out of that thin little patty, although usually I'm too concentrated on the well-seasoned meat to pay attention until it trickles down into my sleeve.
Well deserved, El Cap, but if you're looking for a truly great burger in the Bay area, you should hearken back to last year's CL Tournament of Burgers. When I tried 64 burgers throughout the Tampa and St. Pete area, El Cap didn't come out on top.

Tournament of Burgers be damned, El Cap has been my local burger destination of choice since I moved to St. Pete.
I went to Square One twice in the past 3 days...last night was the Ostrich burger on gruyere, sun dried tomato mayo, canadian bacon on a wheat bun. methinks Square one should be somewhere up there
