Wondering what are going to be the next 'it' things in the food world in 2009? Here's the scoop:
New (and Unusual Flavor) Pairings
Toasted sesame and rootbeer? Tarragon and beetroot? According to the spice mogul McCormick, these are just some of the flavor combinations slated to be "hot" this year. Through their research, McCormick's sensory analysts, trend experts, and chefs predict by keeping their "finger on the pulse of flavor". Many of these combinations blend tastes from completely diverse cultures, which is also a growing trend in the food and restaurant world. To see the rest of their predictions, and recipes to accompany them, go to the Flavor Forecast 2009.
Grocery Stores and Restaurants Going Green
Unless you live under a rock and/or never go out to buy your food, you're already familiar with the organic food craze. Not only are stores and restaurants featuring organic foods, grocery store chains are changing their colors to green (i.e.: Publix's Greenwise Markets) and more restaurants that feature entirely organic menus are sprouting up. Like Pizza Fusion, a fairly new pizza chain that features gourmet organic food products, "green" buildings with fixtures made from recycled materials, and hybrid cars used as delivery vehicles.
A Facelift for Packaged Foods
Move over energy drinks, here come carbonated, coffee, and canned beverages with the opposite effects. New "relaxation drinks" are making their way into the market. Drank tells you to "slow your roll" instead of partying like a rock star, and NESCAFÉ's Body Partner relaxing coffee is decaffeinated and infused with chamomile.
Beauty Foods
Who needs expensive anti-aging creams and ointments for your face? Now you'll be able to ingest them! Food companies are on the bandwagon to help consumers achieve a youthful glow with food, drinks, and powders. Nestle released their Glowelle Beauty Drink which contains antioxidants for "glowing skin". Masterfoods/MARS, Inc. has followed the beauty food fad with their Beautiful Milk Chocolate that's supposed to "hydrate from within to support beautiful-looking skin."
The Rise of the Locavores
Another rising trend in the food world is eating locally grown and sustainable foods. Our food comes from almost every corner of the world these days and much of it travels thousands of miles over land and sea before it ends up on our tables. By eating locally we not only know where our food is coming from and how its grown, but we're also supporting the local food growers and producers.
The Locavores are a group of "concerned culinary adventurers" from the San Francisco area that challenge people to eat food that comes from within a 100-mile radius and strive to spread the word about their cause. Hey, they even got the word "locavore" in the dictionary!
Why not start buying more of your food from our own local farmers at markets like the Saturday Morning Market in St. Pete and the Ybor City Saturday Market?

I went to the Ybor City Saturday Market and their onions had Mexico stickers on them. Are their foods REALLY local/regionally grown?? Does anyone know???
The problem with Farmer's Markets (although I love 'em) is that you often find produce vendors that get their produce from the same places that Publix does. If you want local, you have to ask. Or find a stand that's farmer-driven that you can trust.
