The Short List — Weekend Edition

- Call it the renaissance of Kobe Bryant.

Already on the verge of winning a gold medal with the redeem team, the once-accused rapist and all-around NBA "me-first" guy is apparently more popular in China than Yao Ming. On the heels of that comes the revelation Kobe loves comics, too, and soccer.

- What's a calendar year without a little Radiohead backlash?

Yesterday, Wade reported how Hold Steady guitarist Tad Kubler kindled a blog flame war by admitting he liked Radiohead better when they played straight rock. What a shock, coming from a straight rock guitar player.

click to enlarge David Berman thinks Radiohead = miserable.

Then, on Monday, Silver Jews frontman/lisper David Berman, talking about the album In Rainbows, told Pitchfork, "all you'll get over and over again is things are miserable, don't try, things suck … Never before has there been a 'greatest band in the world' who had so little to say about anything."

Now I like Berman, but does anyone else think he didn't really listen to In Rainbows?

- Keith Olbermann says Bush is making more shit up, this time about Iran.

- And yeah, apparently, Warner Brothers is actually serious about making a Goonies 2, with the same actors, nonetheless. Let's pretend I didn't just type that and instead enjoy these Goonies quotes:

Mikey: Okay, this is the little boys' room, and that cave over there is the little girls' room.

[Brandon heads to a different cave]

Mikey: Brand, where're you going?

Brandon Walsh: This is the *men's* room.

Chunk: Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?

Mouth: No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Brandon Walsh: I'm gonna hit you so hard that when you wake up your clothes will be out of style!

Stef: You know your voice is kind of nice when your mouth isn't screwing it up.

Mouth: Yeah and you looks are kind of pretty. When your face isn't screwing it up.

(get your tissues for this one...)

Mikey: Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket.

My sister Alli bought me the "Goonies" DVD for Christmas. I've probably viewed it at least a half-dozen times since then. It's a guaranteed mood-lifter, especially for those of us who grew up watching, loving and relating to it. Yeah, a sequel at this point in the game sounds like heresy.
