Years ago, the Suncoast resort offered strong drinks, a great Tiki bar, and one of the best places in south St. Pete where anyone could go and be themselves. The resident theater company, Gypsy Productions, showcased some brilliant local talent and brought new audiences to the tired venue.

Two of those most prominent local talents — Daniel Harris and William Bryant — will shine again at the Flamingo Resort's BLU Room. Their cabaret show, the first in a series, features solos, duets and ensemble pieces.

20 Penny Circus: Send in the clowns — and the nail guns

A cutting-edge variety act blends comedy, vaudeville, stunts and more at the Improv this Sunday.

In an era of mainstream-TV freaks and YouTubers knocking each other in the joybag for laughs, smart, well-crafted and theatrical sideshow entertainment has been kind of hard to find. Enter 20 Penny Circus, a couple of Floridian contemporary clowns whose unique balance of vaudeville, comedy, magic and potentially injurious stunts has been inducing thrills and winces in audiences for more than three years.

"It's entertainment for people with questionable tastes," says Tyler Sutter, one half of the duo. "That definitely fits."

  • Steve Zimmerman will help ring in the new year at Tampa Improv.

Despite another holiday, there's plenty of comedy to be seen this week. But there's a catch: New Year's Eve shows tend to be much more expensive that regular shows.

Of course, they sometimes include champagne or food or other amenities, too. And you're celebrating a new year, right? Just check the venue's site for details.

And remember, there are no shows on New Year's Day. So you have time to rest of you're, um, "tired" from the night before. Here's what's on tap this week.

'Tis the season for comedy, but not quite as much as we normally get. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are fun times to spend with family, but not at a comedy club. No shows those nights.

But there are still plenty of stand-up options the rest of the week. Here are your best bets:

Posted By on Fri, Dec 19, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Stand-up comedians are writers, naturally. Somebody has to jot down those funny observations that get used on stage.
But some comedians take the writing thing a step further and actually complete books. Whether they're true-life accounts of a comedy career, a springboard for funny stories or a bit of fiction, local performers have some books you should check out. Here a couple of comedians who have written books, both of which are available on Amazon in e-book format:
