Kimberly Hendrix was known around the arts scene as a lively, animated soul. The 45-year-old fashion designer worked under the label K.Hendrix. She split her time between L.A. and St. Pete and always possessed a big-city savvy and busy-bee, nocturnal energy about her. She smiled a lot, gave warm hugs and professed her love of Spongebob Squarepants. For a living, she cleverly repurposed her designs from 100-percent reclaimed and recycled materials, adding sequins, dyed leathers, knits and color-washed silks.
I met Kimberly during a shoot for our first Style Issue in 2011. Hard to believe it's been three and a half years. I was recovering from a bout with bronchitis and she dragged me through Ybor looking for late-night food. It was a long shoot at the Castle, but ultimately enjoyable despite my listlessness. Kimberly made me feel like an instant friend. She was easy to talk to (when she stayed still a moment to pay attention!) and when she did, she was genuine, focused and empathetic.
It's with a very heavy heart that I report that Ms. Hendrix lost a long battle with cancer yesterday. Friends and fans can celebrate her memory on Sunday 4-7 p.m. at One Progress Plaza, 200 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. No black or somber colors, per Kimberly's request. Please wear something white and/or with sequins. How fitting, K.
