Poet Shay Cook reads from her latest collection Black Silk Tuesday, July 22, 6 to 7 p.m., at the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Public Library. Her poetry crosses all cultural lines and covers all aspects of the human experience — love, grief, forgiveness and more.

Learn how to Kickstart Your Book! in a workshop on Tuesday, July 22, 6 to 8 p.m., at McAlister’s Deli, 4410 W. Boy Scout Blvd., Suite 150. Krayl Funch of An Appealing Plan will share her strategies to raise money to publish. Learn about crowdfunding and how to use ads to drive supporters to your campaign. Tickets are $25 each.

The Tampa Writers Critique Alliance next meets on Wed., July 23, 7 p.m., at the Barnes & Noble in Carrollwood. Visitors are welcome, but only members’ works will be discussed, about five pieces per session. Works critiqued are submitted two weeks in advance. If you’re interested in attending, contact the group for copies of the submitted pieces if possible, though it’s not required to attend. The Tampa Writers Alliance Poetry Group meets the next day, Thursday, July 24, 7 p.m., at the same Barnes & Noble.

The planet Mars has fascinated humans since the birth of astronomy. Join stargazer Craig MacDougal on Thursday, July 24, 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., as he traces the history of Mars knowledge and the science fiction stories these discoveries have inspired. He’ll be at the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library.

Local author Thomas Ward discusses the roles witches, werewolves and monsters play in fiction, film, religion and mythology at the C. Blythe Andrews, Jr. Public Library Saturday, July 26, 2 to 3 p.m.

Catch Tim Dorsey, the former Tampa Tribune journalist turned novelist, at the Ruskin Library Saturday, July 26, 2 p.m. He’ll discuss his 15 zany, Florida-based mystery novels, answer questions and sign copies of his books.

Local storytellers share myths, legends and lore at Campfire Tales, Saturday, July 26, 7 to 9 p.m., at Barley Mow Brewing Company in Largo. Storytellers include Indy McDaniel, Ross Tarr, Russil Tamsen, Billie Noakes, Susan Adger and Delaney Rose. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door and $1 off selected drafts.

USF instructor/writer Anda Peterson will host her next Mindful Writing Workshop Sunday, July 27, 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Panera Bread, 112 Westshore Blvd., Tampa. Cost is $15 suggested, or pay what you can.
