Beards seem to have become today's fashionable facial hair, displacing the trimmed goatee of yesteryear with a proud, unkempt growth that garners more respect the shaggier it becomes.
But what about the mustache? Where are the hipster culture tributes to the variety of hairstyles above the mouth? Relegated to movie and television stars of the 1980s, as well as a stereotype of men with questionable ethics, hardly anyone picks up the banner for the mustache.
Except the Mustache Kings, of course.
Nick Cantone provides the jokes, while Brandon Freitag has the musical chops. But they share that specific style of facial hair and a desire to entertain, and together they'll be performing musical comedy tonight at Tampa Improv.
Their set includes funny songs with stand-up premises, often sharing their experiences as mustachioed gentlemen. There's no shame in their lip-based lifestyle choice, as evidenced by the title of their CDs, Tickle Strip Express, and Mustache II Society. If musical comedy and proud mustaches are your thing, this is the show for you. Longtime comedian Murv Seymour is the opener.
Showtime is Wednesday at 8 p.m. 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. Info: improvtampa.com or 813-864-4000.
